Leafhoppers and Meat ants
Meat ants, also known as gravel ants are an omnivorous species of ants found throughout Australia. They live in vast underground nests and are very hostile to intruders. Leafhopper is a common name for any insect in the species Cicadellidae. They are found in any habitat that can support vascular plant life. [6] |
The leafhoppers secrete a sugary resin used to break down plants. This substance is then collected by meat ants, who proceed to use the substance as a way to preserve food. The resin is also a ready food source for the ants. In return ants provide protection to the leafhoppers from predators. [7] |
